Groupon: Bargain Coupon Offers (Coming Soon to Detroit!)

If you haven't signed up for Groupon yet (it's free to register), you may want to now! Groupon has been very successful in other cities and they're currently working on bringing it to Detroit! (I’ve been seeing more and more Groupon ads on the internet, so I’m hoping that means it’s close!) It will be launched soon! Of course, in order to begin featuring businesses in Detroit, they'll need more registered users interested in participating. It's FREE to register and there's no obligation for you to participate in any future offers! Watch the video HERE to learn what its all about!

A "Groupon" is a coupon offer that will be valid if enough people agree to participate (visit the establishment, cash in the coupon, etc.). Each day, Groupon features an unbeatable deal on the best stuff to do, see, eat, and buy in your city. By promising businesses a minimum number of customers, they get discounts you won't find anywhere else ("collective buying power!"). If the Groupon offer reaches its set quota of participation, your offer will be sent to you via email to print and redeem. It's a win-win situation, since you get a great deal and the company benefits from your business! Another cool feature: Groupon offers can be gifted to others (since you pay via credit card when you agree to an offer)!

How it works (from the Groupon website):

1. Each day we feature something cool to do at an unbeatable price. Restaurants, Theatre, Spas, Classes, Sporting Events, Bars, Museums, Concerts, Gyms and a whole lot more...
2. You only get it if enough people join that day… so invite your friends!
3. Check back the next day for another awesome Groupon.

Groupon looks like a great way to save money and I'd love to see it operational in the Detroit area (our friends in Cleveland really love their daily Groupon deals)! If you own a business, you can learn how to work with Groupon to develop a featured deal. If you don't live in Detroit, check to see if Groupon is already operating in a large city near you!

Redbox: New Free DVD Rental Code (expiration unknown)

Find a Redbox Kiosk near you, select "Rent with Promo Code," Enter the promotional code 2DGTAL22, choose your movie and check out. The code can be used once per credit or debit card. Be sure to return your movie before 9 pm tomorrow to avoid paying $1 for each additional day. Thanks, Freebies 4 Mom!

AMC: See 10 Oscar-Nominated Movies for $40

You can see all ten Oscar Best Picture nominees at participating AMC Theaters on two Saturdays: February 27 and March 6. Five movies will be shown consecutively on each date starting at 10:30am.

Tickets go on sale Friday, February 12. A one-day pass can be purchased for as little as $25 with a free MovieWatcher membership (ask about this program at the box office), and two-day passes start at $40. You’ll also receive a free large popcorn with unlimited refills.

This could make a unique gift for your favorite movie buff!

Pocket Your Dollars has all the details here. Thanks, Carrie!

Blockbuster Express: FREE DVD Rental Codes

Blockbuster Express kiosks are now appearing around Metro Detroit, attempting to compete with the success of RedBox rentals. You’ll want to check for locations near you, but many area VG’s, Oak Ridge Market and Hollywood Market locations now have a Blockbuster Express kiosk for your convenience.

Blockbuster Express charges $1.00 for one night’s rental. Return your movie before 9 pm the following day to avoid an additional $1.00/day charge. Couponing to Disney has some Blockbuster Express rental codes to share (limit one use per credit card):

W212A1 – Get a free rental (only valid on Wednesdays!)

KIOSK - Free one night rental (exp 2/10/10)

POPCORN – Rent 1, get 1 free (exp 2/12/10)

McDonald's: Valentine Friend Pack Coupons

Photo: Confessions of a Coupon Clipper

McDonald's currently has a "Valentine Friend Pack" booklet of 12 coupons available at select locations! My husband found these tonight at the Clinton Township location (near Hayes and 19 Mile Rd) for only $1.00 (they may be priced at $2.00 in other areas). The booklet includes the following coupons:

• (3) FREE Bag of Apple Dippers
• (3) FREE Small Apple Juice or Milk Jug
• (3) FREE Small Cone
• (2) FREE Hamburger

• (1) FREE Small McCafe Coffee (for Mom and Dad)

Coupons are valid 2/14/10-5/31/2010. Redeemable by children ages 12 and under only (yes, even the coffee coupon states that on the back!). Limit one coupon, per customer, per visit.

These coupons are a great idea for classroom valentines, sending in valentine's cards to young friends and relatives - and for treats for your own children in the coming months! The coffee alone costs around $2.29! Let us know if you spot these coupons in another location. You might also want to contact locations near you to see if they have any Valentine treat coupon booklets before making a special trip.

New Resource: Macomb Fresh Food Price Chart!

I'm often asked for the best way to save money on produce and meat each week. One way to save consistently is pretty simple - STICK TO THE SALES. Not just any sales, of course, but the best "loss leader" prices on fresh foods (loss leaders are those front-page items advertised to lead you into the store).

Some Examples
When I find boneless, skinless chicken breast for $1.49 per pound, I buy 10 or 20 pounds, portion and prepare it for meals, and freeze for future use. When lean ground beef is $1.59 per pound, we buy 10 pounds, mix burgers and meatballs and freeze. If you're not excited about buying larger amounts and freezing them, don't worry. Simply sit down at the beginning of the week and take a look at the best prices around town - then plan your weekly menu around those items.

The Benefits

1. Spend less.
By purchasing when prices are lowest, you're saving the most you possibly can on these items. If you can plan your meals around the best sales at your store(s), you'll avoid a last-minute trip to the store for dinner ingredients (as well as that extra expense).

2. Enjoy variety.
When you focus on sale fruits and vegetables, you can dig your family back out of the produce routine you may have unknowningly fell into. Heather commented, "After a few weeks I noticed that I was coming home with a much bigger variety of fresh fruits & vegetables. By checking the sale list, I realized we could have fresh kiwis or kale for the same price as the boring apples & baby carrots I previously kept bringing home."

How do you know a "best price" when you see one? Based on an excellent suggestion by Amy on the MMS Facebook Fan Page, Stacey and I have been working on a list of best prices for meats and produce in the Macomb area. For now, it's titled the "Macomb Fresh Food Price Chart" (though I'm open to your creative name ideas!). I've included basic items that are usually advertised on sale and listed 3 prices for each - an average regular price, an average sale price and a BEST PRICE (which I've tracked with the store name and date of the most recent lowest price - you'll notice that produce is always priced lowest when it's in-season). While this list is nothing fancy, it should help you to recognize a good price when you see one!

I hope that the Fresh Food Price Chart is a helpful tool for you - and I'm eager to hear what you think!
