Sunshine Thrift: 1/2 OFF Clothing August 1, 2009

I just received an email from Sunshine (if you're interested in Sunshine' email notices, you can sign up for their email list in-store at the front counter):

Customer Appreciation Sale
50% OFF ALL CLOTHING
Saturday, August 1 - 8:00AM - 8:00PM

Prices for clothing start as low as $0.80 ($0.40 after sale discount!) and include a variety of name brands for both children and adults! Spring and summer apparel will be featured.

If you're willing to hunt (and double-check for stains, holes or broken zippers), there are many treasures to be found here. Sunshine's sale makes prices even lower than those you could find at garage sales - with a much larger selection.

The store may be busy throughout the day and dressing rooms will be closed. For $1-3 per item, I usually don't mind taking a chance on the strange sizing of women's clothing if it's something I like.

Sunshine Thrift Store
37655 S. Gratiot in Clinton Township (near 16 Mile)

For more information, visit Sunshine's Website or read my previous Sunshine post.

Giveaway: YoBaby Gift Pack

Stonyfield’s YoBaby line of organic yogurts marks its 10th birthday this year by reformulating YoBaby to include vitamin D and zinc, both known to boost immunity and promote the development of strong bones and teeth. YoBaby is still all natural and certified organic, made with milk from cows fed organic feed and not treated with antibiotics or artificial growth hormones.

They've given
YoBaby Yogurt a new look and improved nutrition…yet it still has the same great taste! While I care that I'm feeding my kids the very best in natural ingredients, their only concern is that it tastes great and comes in a size that's perfect for kids! With six great flavors to choose from (pear, banana, blueberry, apple, peach, or vanilla), who can resist?

When my kids were babies, I wanted them to have the very best. What mom doesn't? YoBaby Yogurt was one of their favorite first foods! And even though they're not babies anymore, they still love the taste of YoBaby.

Thanks to the generosity of Stonyfield Farm, one lucky Macomb Money Savers reader will be rewarded with a YoBaby Gift Pack. It includes one YoBaby bowl with lid, one organic YoBaby bib, and a bundle of FIVE YoBaby FREE PRODUCT coupons!

In the meantime, ALL of you can enjoy this $1.00/1 YoBaby Yogurt printable coupon!

Does it PAY to pay a compliment to a product or store?

I've been encouraging those of you who took advantage of VG's recent triple coupon promotion to let your store manager and/or corporate know that you appreciated their offer. Shannie followed that advice and found that it actually PAYS to take the time to let stores know what you think! Here's her report:

I just wanted to share that I received a letter from VG's and a gift
certificate for $5.00
! What an awesome store. It really made me feel
like they appreciated me as a customer....I followed your advice on your blog
and e-mailed them thanking them for participating in triples and how that helps
people during this rough economy. I also noted that this was my first time
shopping there and they had a nice store and friendly employees. I was stunned
to get the gift card, they didn't have to do that, but it was a very nice
gesture.

Stores learn from your feedback, positive or negative. Whenever you can, I recommend sharing your experience with them. I'm thrilled that VG's takes the time to show appreciation to their customers! Does this happen all the time? No! I've written to Meijer many times either with a comment or compliment and received no response at all. On the other hand, I've complained about a coupon that was denied at Kmart (a store coupon THEY sent me by email); when I didn't receive the response I was promised, I continued to call until my issue reached corporate level and I was rewarded with a $25 gift card. The store's reaction will vary widely, but it never hurts to try!

Manufacturers appreciate your feedback as well and will send their loyal customers nice coupons that can't be found anywhere else. When you have time, contact your favorite brands via email and let them know what you like about their product. You can also ask for coupons or ask if there are ways that you can save. A Full Cup has created a Manufacturer's Internet Contact Information List here - it's a great resource. Find your favorite brands and send a few emails each day. You'll love the surprises that arrive in your mailbox!

When you find a product that doesn't meet your expectations, be sure to call or email to let the company know. Your feedback might help the company learn about an error in processing or quality. You will usually be offered a coupon good for a FREE product replacement.

As a consumer, it can pay to speak your mind! Have you ever been rewarded for contacting a store or manufacturer? Let us know!

Walmart: School Supply Deals

I am thrilled that Walmart and Meijer are feeling the need to compete with each other on school supplies this year - it's driving the prices down for the customers! Walmart started at $0.30 each for these items. Meijer countered with $0.19. A trip to Walmart today revealed that they've dropped prices again to $0.15. Yes, it's only pennies, but who can't resist a new box of crayons at a price like this? We've stocked up for the next year!

$0.05 Spiral Notebooks

$0.15 Crayola 24-count crayons

$0.15 Elmer's Glue Sticks
, 2 pk

Okay, Meijer - bring it on! :)

Welcome New Readers!

Once upon last February, my friend Holly called. She was looking to save money on groceries and was growing frustrated with conflicting information on some nationwide money-saving websites I had given her. I knew she needed information specific to our area. When I couldn't find it, I created it. And you're reading it. THANK YOU.

Holly is now a veteran couponer and money-saver extraordinaire. Happy to spread the knowledge to her friends who've asked, "HOW do you DO that?" she decided to lead an informal coupon class tonight. It was a pleasure being able to attend and meet the lovely ladies there (thanks for coming, girls!).

There are a few reasons why I continue to pour time into this blog (and yes, it is a labor of love...and possibly slight insanity). Just in case you were interested to know, here they are:
  1. The Michigan economy has taken a serious downturn. Many have been laid off and many of my friends are facing cuts at work. Everyone's pinching pennies these days. I have learned how to save and I feel the need to share what I know (this is the curse of being a teacher, I suppose!).

  2. I want to use the resources God has given my family as wisely as possible. That involves stretching our grocery budget while providing us with extra to share with those in need. I want you to be able to do the same, if you should so choose. Food banks in the Detroit area are empty. I'd love to see them overflowing with the generosity of couponers, wouldn't you?!

  3. Occasionally, I get an encouraging email or comment that keeps me going. These notes make my day (and make me feel as if I'm not just talking to a wall!) Thanks to those of you who take the time to let me know that you've benefitted from my efforts!

Would you like to help make this blog a better place? Here are some things you can do:

  1. Comment or email (use the "Contact" tab above) when you find a good deal in the area. Whether advertised or unadvertised, if I haven't posted it, we may not know about it. I LOVE hearing from readers!

  2. Spread the word. Tell your family and friends that this blog exists. The more readers, the more we can all benefit and learn the best deals around town!

  3. Print coupons from my blog. While this is a small thing, it does support the time and effort I put into posting matchups. While Bricks links and other printable coupon sites don't necessarily give rewards, those under listed under"Printable Coupons" in the right margin will.

VG's: July 27 - August 2, 2009

Save your receipts - as part of VG's Community Share Program, they can benefit non-profit groups in Michigan. You don't need to sign up; simply find a group collecting receipts and turn yours in to them. Trinity Lutheran Church in Utica (45160 Van Dyke at Hall Rd) collects VG's receipts to purchase socks for the homeless. You can leave your receipts at the front desk there if you can't find another participating group.

If you enjoyed the triple coupons at VG's this past month, be sure to contact your store manager or complete the survey on the bottom of your receipt to let him/her know. Not only will positive feedback be appreciated, but it could encourage similar coupon events in the future!

Load e-coupons to your card before you shop: Visit Bringing Hope to the Table, Cellfire, P&G E-savers and Shortcuts. Each website lists the e-coupons that can be loaded onto your Kroger Card so that you can save even more! E-coupons are limited to one use and will not double.

Meijer: July 26 - August 1, 2009

This week is full of "Buy 10 for $10, get the 11th Free" Meijer Brand Items. Whenever possible, buy these items in groups of 11 to maximize your savings (it bascially reduces the cost of each item to $0.90!). I've listed them as $1.00 each in the matchups just in case you're not able to mix and match to come up with 11 in your shopping trip; the "Buy 10 for $10, get the 11th Free" price will follow each final price in brackets.

*DOUBLE COUPONS - This deal requires a coupon to DOUBLE at Meijer. Note that most Macomb-area Meijer stores will double only 2 identical coupons (up to $0.50) per transaction. See notes below.

**MEIJER MEALBOX STORE COUPONS - Meijer store policy, as posted here on the
Mealbox Website. You may want to print a copy of this and keep it with your shopping list to show your cashier (if they aren't familiar with corporate policy):

1.) Mealbox coupons may be used in addition to Manufacturer coupons.
2.) Mealbox coupons may be used each time a condition is met, which could be multiple times per transaction.
(For example: a coupon for $1.00 off 2 soups can be used multiple times if you have a coupon printed and the number of soups purchased matches, i.e. 2 coupons = 4 soups.)
3.) Mealbox coupons cannot be doubled or tripled at any time.
4.) Stores have the right to limit the quantity of items to normal retail purchases per transaction.
You may NOW use more than one identical Mealbox coupon per transaction, but note that the computer may only deduct one automatically - the rest may require cashier approval, so watch carefully.

Please let me know if you see any other good deals I've forgotten to mention (we could ALL benefit from your contributions)! View the Meijer Ad online here (available on Sunday).

Other Reminders:

  • MOST Macomb Meijer stores will double coupons up to $0.50, but no more than 2 identical coupons per transaction. Additional identical coupons will be redeemed at face value. The new Clinton Twp/Groesbeck location may double no more than one (of each identical coupon) per transaction. You may want to call your location before shopping to verify.
  • You can print 2 copies of each printable coupon per computer. Use your back button and refresh the screen if necessary or return to the original coupon link. You can print as many Mealbox coupons as you'd like.
  • If a particular sale item is out of stock, be sure to ask your cashier or a customer service assistant for a raincheck.

Worth Reading: Spending Personalities

Making finances work with your spouse + finding your money personality

In "
Up Close & Personal with The Money Couple," Scott and Bethany Palmer describe the five different money personalities: spender, saver, flyer, risk-taker and security-seeker. The Palmers say, "Once people discover their money personalities, their spending habits (or lack-of-spending habits), their fears about money and their fights about money all start to make sense."
