Guest Post: Kathy’s Story

Photo: Kathy’s new laundry room cabinets, made possible by reducing her grocery bill by $100+ per week – and made necessary by all the stockpiling done over the last year!

As Jolyn celebrates the one year anniversary of her blog "Macomb Money Savers," I wanted to share with all of you, my "story". If you're like me, and I'm assuming many of you are, you've struggled in a very challenging Michigan economy and came out fighting!

The reason I can assume this is because you've found Macomb Money Savers. That means you're a fighter and you've done as much research as possible on ways to save your family money and stay afloat in these trying times. For that you (and I) should be applauded! However, my biggest thanks goes out to Jolyn for taking her valuable time to research and detail all the deals she finds on a daily basis.

About one year ago, when our finances were spiraling out of control, I started doing that very same research. I found  many national money-saving sites, and they were very useful. However, they didn't  really help me with the day-to-day savings (in our local stores) that I was in need of. Then one day I stumbled on to Macomb Money Savers and that all changed.

Over the last year, I've managed to take back control of our food budget and this has spilled over into other parts of our life as well. I've stockpiled so many good deals and we've managed to eliminated the need to use credit cards at the grocery store. I know that sounds ridiculous but, that is exactly what we were doing!

I've now moved on from being needy to wanting to help people in need and although I've never met Jolyn in person, I know we share this common goal. If you've been couponing for a while, you know that you can only use so many "free" tubes of toothpaste right? However, sometimes I feel that one tube of toothpaste isn't really going to make a difference, don't you? Well, after countless emails with Jolyn, it occurred to us that we have an entire "coupon army" that we could call on to help and perhaps direct these donations to a cause of the month.

This topic is now on my heart and although it's still in the early stages, I think it could become a huge success. Please feel free to share any ideas you may have that might help us move forward and get this of the ground.

Like all of you, I'm looking forward to another year of savings and other budget-friendly ideas from  Macomb Money Savers and I'm grateful for all that last year offered!

Sincerely,
Kathy

My note: Kathy blogs at Makin’ It in Michigan – and you’ll want to visit her there! Her posts are picture-filled and her blog is full of great ideas (including many unique deals you won’t find elsewhere)! You may also remember this post from Kathy on creating frugal gift baskets!

Coupon Preview: Sunday, February 21, 2010

You can look forward to THREE COUPON INSERTS this weekend: a SmartSource insert, a  RedPlum insert and a Procter & Gamble (P & G) insert. It may be a good weekend to get an extra paper or two!

Remember that this is only an estimate of the coupons our area might receive - brands and coupon values are likely to be slightly different in our Sunday paper.

Some coupons that may be of interest include (note that x = expiration date and E-T-S = excludes trial sizes):
  • Cheerios varieties Save $1/2 (4/3/10)

  • Chocolate Cheerios Save $1/2 (4/3/10)

  • Uncle Ben’s Whole Grain Brown Rice Save $1.00/1

  • Wheaties Cereal Save $1/1 (4/3/10)

If you'd rather not pay $1.50 for extra papers/coupon inserts, you may want to consider these ideas:

  • Check your local Dollar Store - they may still be selling papers for $1.00 each, even after Sunday has passed. Some dollar stores have stopped carrying them recently, but Dollar Tree stores still have them available (call your store to confirm).

  • Ask your friends, coworkers and family members if they have coupons they're not using.
  • Find a friend (or group of friends) willing to trade coupons with you.
Take a look at the list available at Sunday Coupon Preview - do you see any coupons that could lead to great deals in the future!? Please share!

Guest Post: Stephanie’s Story

Hi, my name is Stephanie. I am married with 3 boys, I work part-time and drive the carpool the rest of the time. I have always been one to use coupons and find a great deal but since Jolyn started Macomb Money Savers I’m also able to save money and live comfortably.

In the last year I have been able to put extra money into our savings. At first it was tight because we were used to living off of every cent we made. We would be out of spending/grocery money before our next paycheck. Putting ourselves on a savings plan taught me how to pass up on a deal I didn't really need and how to stretch my dollars from store to store while building up a  stockpile.

In September, we endured a family tragedy but thanks to my new savvy shopping we had money in our savings when we needed it most. Our rainy day arrived and we were prepared. The savings was such a blessing - but at the same time so was our stockpile. When I was unable to find the energy to hit the stores, I found that I didn't need to...I had everything I needed for several weeks stocked right on my basement shelves.

Now a year into following MMS we are able to save money, maintain a stockpile and have extra money left at the end of the week. It’s great to have a place to go to share and find ideas and deals. Thanks so much to MMS for all the time and money that has been saved, for all the time and energy you pour into this site every day...you are a blessing to us. Thank You!

MyPoints: Rewards for Reading Email!

MyPoints.com

I've mentioned MyPoints in my recent presentations (as a way to earn free gift cards), but I realized that I haven't ever described it to the rest of you! Here's the scoop:

I joined my points in 2004 (yes, it's been THAT long!) and have enjoyed the rewards ever since. My husband and I each have an account and we use it to earn about 2 $25 gift cards each year (4 cards between the 2 of us). We like to choose restaurant gift cards (Panera and Olive Garden are favorites!) and use them for free date nights, but there are plenty of reward choices (Kohl's, Old Navy, CVS, Target, Walmart, Walgreens, Pottery Barn, Home Depot, iTunes, & Starbucks, just to name a few)! You can use them as gifts or special treats for yourself!

MyPoints will reward you for:
  • Clicking on links sent to you in emails
You'll get a few sent to you daily. I find I like these sent to my primary email address so I can click on the link and delete the emails immediately (they cluttered up my backup address and I would often forget to read them before they expired). You'll get 5 points per email and 10 points per survey attempted (50 points if you qualify for the survey).

  • Shopping online through the MyPoints website
You'll be rewarded in points depending on the amount you spend. (I find that I get a better cash return through Ebates and Cashbaq, however).

  • Printing and redeeming coupons
MyPoints partners with both Coupons.com and Smartsource printable sites. You'll have to actually redeem the coupons to get the credit, however, and I've never seen it update in my account, so I'm a little hesitant to recommend it. Plus, when you print these same coupons from Macomb Money Savers, you're helping to support the site (as well as my time and effort) - and I really appreciate that!

That being said, here's my personal recommendation to make the most of a MyPoints account:
  • Sign up for a MyPoints account. It's easy and free (and as long as you can restrain yourself from the ads, you'll come out with a little free spending money).
  • Click on the daily emails as they arrive. Delete them afterward. Watch your points slowly add up. Be patient - it WILL take time, but you're only spending a few seconds each day on this.
  • Visit the MyPoints website occasionally and click on Easy Points. You'll get 5 points for each ad/question you participate in.
  • Shop through MyPoints only when Ebates or Cashbaq isn't offering a better reward.

CLICK ON THE BUTTON below to check out MyPoints and sign up for an account!

And let us know if you're already being rewarded by MyPoints - how do you like the program?

Guest Post: Nicole’s Money-Saving Story

NicolePHOTO: Nicole’s shopping trip this week: 8 large boxes of cereal, 6 Warm Delights, 4 bags Chex Mix, 4 Green Giant Vegetables, 2 half gallons orange juice, 1 gallon milk,  1 gallon water. Grand Total??? Around $9.00.

Have you ever thought about how many groceries you can get for the price of your Venti Non-Fat Vanilla Latte that you order from a local beanery?  It never crossed my mind until a few weeks ago when I started using Macomb Money Saver's coupon matchups!  Walking out of Meijer with 4 bags of groceries in one hand and my Latte in the other hand, IT HIT ME!  Wow, these two things cost me almost the same amount of money!  Amazing!

I dove into this couponing concept about a month ago, January 1st.  Like most people do in the New Year, my husband and I sat down to look at our monthly bills and tried to figure out where we could cut some costs.  It seemed as if all of our bills were non-negotiables - bills with a fixed cost. He then showed me what we were spending on groceries each month.  I was surprised, appalled, disgusted, and a bit embarrassed.  I did most of the shopping for our family and when I needed something I would run to the store, with debit card in hand, and buy, and swipe, and be done.  This shopping habit cost my family a lot of money!  My mom discovered MMS and tried to convince me to coupon, but I had a lot of excuses: "I'm too busy!
I don't have the time!  I don't want to run from store-to-store."  She began saving money and after looking at our budget the only bill I could cut costs from was groceries.

Jolyn has made this transition so easy for me!  I literally changed my philosophy of shopping overnight with her support and guidance!  I now will only buy things on sale that I have several coupons for.  I follow the coupon matchups weekly and stock up on the good deals.  I also don't sway away from my "list," which was another bad habit that I had.   My husband has been keeping track of our savings and we are currently saving 70%!  I now have MORE food and MORE money!

Macomb Money Savers not only saved me money, but saved me time and saved me from arguing about money every month with my husband. My house is much calmer, plus we can afford some things now that we couldn't before and it is so refreshing! What a wonderful, positive way to start a new year!  Thank you MMS!!!

Nicole is a mother of two children and works as a part-time first grade teacher. Thanks for sharing, Nicole!

Blogoversary Giveaway: $10 to Dan Good Pizza (3 Winners!)

Dan Good Pizza is a Macomb area specialty, with locations in Shelby Township, Sterling Heights, Macomb, New Baltimore and St. Clair Shores. Since Dan Good Pizza appeared in the area, my sister has been raving about how good it is! Thanks to a nice deal from Motor City Steals and Deals, I purchased gift certificates at half the price to share with a few lucky readers (we’re keeping one for ourselves so we don’t miss out on the fun!). There’s nothing like winning a night off from cooking, right?!

The Detroit Free Press listed the Top 10 Metro Detroit Pizzerias last August, and Dan Good Pizza earned a spot on that list. Here’s what Freep Restaurant Critic Sylvia Rector had to say:

The "Dan" is veteran restaurant chef Dan Stackpoole. The "Good" is a deep-dish pizza so light and fabulous, it's worth driving all the way to New Baltimore, where Stackpoole opened his first shop just seven months ago. There's traditional crust, too, but the tender, light, crisp deep-dish crust may be the best we've ever had in a Chicago-style pie. Everything's made in house; the 32 toppings are premium. We expect to hear more from this place.

Since then, 5 more locations have appeared around Macomb. New Baltimore and St. Clair Shores have dine-in options; the rest are carry-out. While  I can’t vouch for Dan Good Pizza myself, here are just a few comments from Macomb Money Savers Facebook Fans:

  • It’s amazing, by far the best pizza i have ever had!

  • It is fantastic!!!! I recommend anyone to try it once!!

  • Very good pizza. I like the thick crust better than regular.

  • Our high school choir program does fundraising there. Everyone I know that has tried it loves it. They are very generous to the community as well.

  • The deep dish is wonderful! Definitely costs more than most places, but worth it if you want really good pizza. My hubby loves all the premium toppings.

  • Papa John's used to be my husband's favorite, but when we a saw DGP in town and that it was a Michigan-based business, we decided we wanted to support them and give it a try.  We were hooked after the first bite!  We love the deep dish pizza - the ingredients are fresh and delicious and we've never had anything but a super delicious pizza from them.

Since every good party starts with a pizza, I thought this giveaway might be a fun way to kick off the blogoversary celebration! HURRY! Complete the form below. Entries will be accepted through Wednesday, February 17 at 10 p.m. EST. I’ll select 3 winners through random.org.

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED.

Disclosure: Macomb Money Savers has provided the gift certificates for this giveaway. Dan Good Pizza did not sponsor this post and is in no way affiliated with this website.

Macomb Money Savers: How It All Began

Image1
One year ago, I posted for the first time on Macomb Money Savers. The website has come a long way since then, to say the least! This week, I’d like to celebrate with you, my readers, for making all of this possible. I’m hoping to feature one giveaway each day for the next week – along with stories from other loyal readers!

Every blog has a story. Did you ever wonder how this website began? Just in case you wanted to know how it all fell together, here’s the story:

My name is Jolyn and I was taught from a young age to spend my money wisely. I have used coupons all of my adult life, and more earnestly since becoming a stay-at-home mom, but only when I stumbled upon the forums at A Full Cup did I start to realize that there were deals still to be found. I began purchasing extra papers and asking for coupon inserts from family and friends – and building a stockpile of items that had been purchased at rock-bottom prices.

My friends always knew I pinched pennies – partially as a necessity, partially as a strange hobby. I would send out emails when the deals were especially good – free items at Meijer, nice samples by request, high-value coupons for printing. I tried to email everyone I thought would be interested…but there would always be someone who would hear about the deal later and lament, “Why didn’t you tell me?!”

Then one day near the beginning of 2009, my friend Holly called asking for advice. Her husband was laid-off and she was working part-time, attempting to feed four teenagers on a very limited budget. She knew how our family shopped. I shared my favorite websites with Holly, directed her to visit some helpful frugal blogs and hoped for the best. Not long after, she called again. The websites were difficult to understand – so many abbreviations, deals involving too many coupons that didn’t exist in our area – and it was only frustrating. What could I do to help?

I thought about it for a while. I knew there wasn’t a blog for our area that detailed the best deals – I had searched high and low. Without knowing entirely what I was getting myself into, one afternoon I started a blog account. I wanted to focus on deals in and around Macomb, so I called it Macomb Money Savers and introduced it to people on my email list along with a few Facebook friends. Word spread more quickly than I’d realized. 10 readers turned into 100 and then into 1,000. The numbers are still growing, which is unbelievable to me. Now over 12,000 unique visitors drop in each month and over 1,300 fans hang out on the Facebook Fan page. And it’s quickly becoming a part-time job just keeping up with the best deals around town!

Today, I’m happy to report that Holly’s family is well-fed. Her kids were amazed that they had more food in the house with dad out of work than ever before! Within months, she was teaching a coupon class to her friends!

My hope is that you will also learn how to stretch your budget to help your family in our challenging economy. And, when possible, that you’ll also help others by sharing money-saving ideas with your friends – and donating items to food banks and charities. It’s just one small way to make a big difference!

Just a side-note: If you didn’t believe sales are cyclical,  you might want to take a look at the sales at Meijer from one year ago, including free Chex Mix, Betty Crocker frosting and Warm Delights, etc. (which are also on sale this week at Meijer)! It’s an interesting study in Grocery 101!
