Thrifty Holiday Idea: Gift Baskets

Kathy from Makin' It in MI has some great ideas for making the most out of your frugal purchases - create a themed gift basket just in time for the holidays!

She begins collecting items (available free or cheap) week-by-week that fit into a certain idea or theme: Coffee Lover's Basket, Movie Lover's Basket, Pasta Lover's Basket or BBQ Lover's Basket. Then she finds a great deal on a nice basket at the Salvation Army and arranges the items together (garage sales and the Flower Factory are also great places to find good prices on baskets!)

Of course, the possibilities are without end! You could put together some CVS/Walgreens purchases to make a Spa Basket or great gift for a teen (makeup, nail polish, and more!). A laundry basket filled with pantry items could become a nice Housewarming Basket (Thanks, Laura!). Small toys and coloring items might make a nice Travel Kit. Have you created baskets with your frugal finds before? What great ideas can you share with the rest of us?

  1. As a house warming gift, I've made a kitchen basket. I used clearance kitchen towels, utencles, measuring cups/spoons, baking dishes and cookie sheets. Then added some grocery freebies/cheep finds like cookie, bread and cake mixes.

    Was a big hit!

  2. We are doing baskets this Christmas with all the free/cheap stuff we've gotten. Lots of smelly stuff (airwick, glade, etc) for the people that like that stuff.

Also working on care packages for my brother and some of his buddies in Iraq. Knew all those free fusion razors from walgreens would come in handy :)
