Royal Oak: Free Flu Shot when You Donate a Coat

Thanks to Colleen for this information (and some useful hints!):

Royal Oak Medical Center will be offering FREE Flu Shots (drive-through style!) on October 31st from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm. For each free shot, you will need to donate 1 coat. In the past, you drive into line and a volunteer will take your coat. Another volunteer will give you a sheet to complete for the shot, then you pull up and get your shot. I don’t think I’ve ever waited longer than 10 minutes for the entire thing, but I’ve never been there first thing when they open.

It works the best if you bring your own pen and wear a short sleeve shirt, as you never get out of your car. If you are going to do kids' shots, it is easiest if you get them out of their car seats, get coats off and roll their window down.

Royal Oak Medical Center (Free-standing building in the Meijer parking lot)
5130 Coolidge Hwy
Royal Oak, MI 48073-1001

*DOUBLE COUPONS - This deal requires a coupon to DOUBLE at Meijer. Note that most Macomb-area Meijer stores will double only 2 identical coupons (up to $0.50) per transaction. See additional notes below.

**MEIJER MEALBOX STORE COUPONS
-
You may want to print a copy of the Meijer Mealbox store policy, as posted here on the Mealbox Website and keep it with your shopping list to show your cashier (in case they aren't familiar with corporate policy):

1.) Mealbox coupons may be used in addition to Manufacturer coupons.

2.) Mealbox coupons may be used each time a condition is met, which could be multiple times per transaction.
(For example: a coupon for $1.00 off 2 soups can be used multiple times if you have a coupon printed and the number of soups purchased matches, i.e. 2 coupons = 4 soups.)

3.) Mealbox coupons cannot be doubled or tripled at any time.

4.) Stores have the right to limit the quantity of items to normal retail purchases per transaction.

You may use more than one identical Mealbox coupon per transaction, but note that some coupons won't deduct at all - be vigilant about watching your subtotal while coupons are scanned. If your total isn't reduced with the scanning of each Mealbox coupon, the coupon didn't work and you'll need to ask you cashier to adjust it manually.

View the Meijer Ad online here (available on Sunday).

Other Reminders:

  • MOST Macomb Meijer stores will double coupons up to $0.50, but no more than 2 identical coupons per transaction. Additional identical coupons will be redeemed at face value. You may want to call your location before shopping to verify. The Clinton Township location on Groesbeck will double ONE identical $0.50 or less coupon per transaction. For best savings on multiple items with coupons that will double, break your order into multiple transactions (this is most easily done at the U-scan).
  • You can print 2 copies of each printable coupon per computer, with some exceptions. Use your back button and refresh the screen if necessary or return to the original coupon link. You can print as many Meijer Mealbox coupons as you'd like.
  • When a particular sale item is out of stock, be sure to ask your cashier or a customer service assistant for a raincheck.

Guest Post: Farmer's Market in the Fall - Winter Squash

Fall brings what in my opinion are some of the best deals of the year – including those on squash. While the grocery stores sell squash by the pound, the farmers market sells it by the piece.

Winter squash can be fun - there are many varieties with subtle differences in flavor. The farmers market usually has a wonderful selection, and if you know what to look for you can usually get a deal that will beat most grocery store sales. On a recent trip I picked up some squash samples to weigh them in and see just how much your dollar can buy. Prices will vary by market, vendor, size, and success of the crop, but the prices here are pretty consistent with what I’ve seen at the Royal Oak market over the last few years. Squash weights will also vary widely, and for these I selected some of the largest squash left in the bin about halfway through the market day. I took pictures of the squash with a dollar so you could see the relative size. A larger squash isn’t always the one with the most mass; some may have a larger cavity than others.

Pie pumpkin
$1 (weighed 3 lbs; $0.33/lb)

Sweet Dumpling
$1 (weighed 1 lb 8 oz; $0.67/lb)

Butternut
$1.50 (weighed 3 lb 4 oz; $0.46/lb)

Acorn
$1.50 (weighed 3 lb 1 oz; $0.49/lb)

Orange Buttercup
$1.50 (weighed 3 lb 6 oz; $0.44/lb)

Green buttercup
$1.50 (weighed 7 oz; $0.34/lb)

Heirloom “Peanut” Pumpkin
$3.50 (weighed 8 lbs 3 oz; $0.43/lb)*

*Purchased at the Greenfield Village farmers market (a special event). While this is one that people will primarily buy as part of the fall décor, I verified with the vendor that this was indeed a good pumpkin to cook up.

A note on heirloom pumpkins: Many varieties of heirloom pumpkins are being sold as decorative pumpkins and pumpkin stacks. Last year after Halloween one of the vendors at the farmers market had their decorative pumpkins on clearance ($1 or $2 each for some pretty sizable squash). I had asked if I could use them to cook with, and the vendor hemmed and hawed, claiming they were edible but probably not too good (it was obvious he didn’t know much about the pumpkins). After some research this year, I am now disappointed I didn't take advantage of this great deal. My instincts said that if it’s an heirloom it probably would taste good since in the past pumpkins were grown primarily to eat, not sit on the front porch. My advice: ask the vendors about the varieties they have. You can always use Google to research how it fares as food. Then if you are tempted to buy one as a centerpiece you can cook it up after the party’s over, or if you luck out and find someone trying to ditch all the “decorative” pumpkins you can snatch up a good deal. Here are some good cooking pumpkins I’ve found masquerading as holiday decorations:
  • “Peanut” or Galeuse d'Eysines
  • Rouge vif d’etampes (this is the pumpkin Disney modeled Cinderella's carriage after)
  • Lumina
  • Cheese
  • Mosquee de province
  • Jarradale
  • Fairytale
  • Queensland Blue
  • Winter Luxury Pie pumpkin (if anyone finds one, please let me know - many claim that these are one of THE best for pies!)

Maple Spiced Squash (serves 5-6)
2 medium acorn (or other) squash
1 cup maple syrup, dark amber
½ stick butter
¾ teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon powdered ginger
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
¼ teaspoon allspice
Kosher or sea salt
Optional: 1 shot whiskey

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Halve the squash and remove seeds, and sprinkle lightly with salt. Place squash cut-side up on a baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes. After baking, remove from oven and let cool for 5-10 minutes, until you can safely handle the squash.

While squash is cooling, heat maple syrup over medium-low heat. Add butter, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and allspice, and whiskey. After butter is melted, turn to low and let warm for 5-10 minutes.

When squash is cool enough to handle, quarter each half and remove skin. Cut squash into sections about ¾” thick. Place in a large baking dish, drizzle syrup mixture over squash. Flip squash to coat. Cover with lid or aluminum foil, cook at 400 degrees for 15 minutes, remove and flip squash, recover. Cook 15 minutes, remove and flip squash, place in oven without cover for an additional 10 minutes.

Squash Ravioli with Herbed Butter Sauce Recipe from Family Fun Magazine

Toasted Squash Seeds
If the only ‘pumpkin seeds’ you’ve ever had are the bleached, over-salted ones from the grocery store, you MUST try toasting your own! They are literally 100x better tasting, and probably 10 times better for you.

Almost any type of winter squash seeds can be toasted up for a yummy treat. The main limiting factor is that some seeds are more labor-intensive to extract from the squash “guts” than others. Try toasting up different seeds to find your favorite (though only toast up 1 variety at a time; they have different cooking times).

Toasting them up is simple; line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil, spray the foil with cooking spray. Place seeds in a single layer, and spray seeds. Lightly sprinkle with sea salt or kosher salt. Turn the oven onto it’s lowest setting, and place seeds in to toast. Check on them after 5 minutes, and use a spatula to flip them. Check in every 5 minutes until they seem close to done – when they start to brown they’re done. You can always take a couple seeds out to taste them to see if you want to pop them back in for a little bit.

Meijer: Matchups In Progress

UPDATE: The Free Press delivered a replacement paper (whew!) and I'm busily entering the best deals of the week. Look for them later today or early tomorrow!

Normally, Friday morning finds me scouring the new Meijer ad, preparing matchups so that you can take a sneak peek and plan ahead. However, though my Detroit Free Press arrived on time, it didn't include next week's Meijer ad (and I am more than a little disappointed). Since the newspaper office is not yet open for the morning, I can't be sure whether that was a slight oversight or simply the publication plan for today, but I'll do my best to investigate.

In the meantime, if YOU are a Detroit News/Free Press reader, did YOU get your Meijer ad? Would you like to share some sale prices with me?

Guest Post: A 7-Week Menu Plan

Do you sometimes wonder what you are going to make for dinner several hours before it’s to be served? Do you despise trying to figure out “what’s for dinner” every week or every day? If so, here is an example of my 7-week Dinner Planning Chart. I created it to keep our food bill down, to eliminate last minute meal planning and avoid ordering out. We're able to purchase ingredients at the best price all while maintaining a variety of meals on the table for our family.

Some benefits of my 7 week plan:

  1. I can look ahead to make sure I get all the ingredients for upcoming meals at a good price (preferably on sale and with coupons).

  2. Each week, I can just look at my chart, check my fridge and then go to the grocery store for the perishable items needed.

  3. I can "prep" for meals in advance when I know I won't have time. For instance, I can mix a marinade one day in advance, cut up veggies the night before, etc. - all in the name of saving time on the days when I don't have any.

  4. As the seasons change, so will my cooking, but my chart stays the same. During the summer when "Lasagna" comes up on the menu I will substitute Ravioli in its place. Many of the chicken dishes I make in the winter will be substituted for barbecued chicken in the summer with corn on the cob. The chart is a guide and it helps, but I don't follow it strictly all the time.

  5. I don't always make the meals in the exact order they are listed on the menu for that week. For instance, the meal that requires the most time will be done on the day of the week where I have the most time.

  6. I try to fill my menu with as many quick and easy meals as possible. Anything that can be prepared during naptime and then baked in the oven goes on my list. :)

  7. When I try a new recipe, go out for a holiday, attend a neighborhood BBQ, etc. then I put my menu aside and return to it on the next day that I need to prepare a meal for our family.
Note: Our family LOVES leftovers so you'll notice that the majority of meals are prepared to last for 2 nights. If your family doesn't care for leftovers then aim for a 3 or 4 week rotating menu plan with 6 or 7 meals each week.

Would you like to try creating a rotating chart of your family's favorite meals to make meal planning easier? You'll find a blank planning chart here (you can edit it as you wish!). I hope this gives your family an idea of how to eliminate meal time stress.

Works-For-Me Wednesday: Gift Card Organizer

This is my first Works-For-Me Wednesday post, but I just remembered an idea good enough to share! :)

We like gift cards, but it seemed like our stash was growing out of control. We get them for Christmas and for the kids' birthdays....and though we love to use them, they were becoming difficult to keep track of! We were keeping them safely filed away, but it meant rifling through an entire stack to find what we wanted. Sometimes we couldn't find it at all. Other times, we overlooked an additional gift card we could have used at the same store.

And then last year, I came across something similar to this while shopping with the kids:
Vinyl Business Card Book. My husband looked at me ever-so-strangely when he opened this as one of his gifts on Christmas morning (he had no idea what I was thinking!), but since then he's recognized and appreciated having all of our gift cards organized in one place!

Here's what it looks like in action:

I've organized the gift cards in an order that seems logical to me (though this page doesn't exactly reflect it!). We grouped them in categories, with similar cards together: department stores, entertainment, restaurants, etc. We track card balances by either writing the amount on the back with a Sharpie or labeling it with a small piece of masking tape. With a little effort, this book has made it easy to see what we have to spend now. When it's time to go shopping, we can grab our gift card file book and we're ready to go!

How do you organize your gift cards?

For more GREAT ideas, check out all of the Works-For-Me Wednesday links at We Are THAT Family!
